Oldoinyo Lengai(Mountain of GOD)

Oldonyo L’engai- 2,960m (9,711 ft) means "Mountain of God" in the language of the native Maasai people. The record of eruptions on the mountain dates to 1883, and flows were also recorded between 1904 and 1910 and again between 1913 and 1915. A major eruption took place in June 1917, which resulted in volcanic ash being deposited about 48km away. A similar eruption took place for several months in 1926 and between July and December 1940, resulting in the ash being deposited as far as Loliondo, which is 100km away. Several minor eruptions of lava were observed in 1954, 1955, 1958 the early 1960s.

In modern times, Oldonyo L’engai erupted on August 14, 1966. Two geologists J. B. Dawson and G. C. Clark visited the crater a week later, reported seeing “a thick column of black ash” that rose for approximately three thousand feet above the volcano and drifted away northwards towards Lake Natron. When the two climbed the cone-shaped vent, they reported seeing a continuous discharge of gas and whitish-grey ash and dust from the centre of the pit.

Oldonyo L’engai erupting in March 2008
Volcanic activity in the mountain caused daily Earth tremors in Kenya and Tanzania was beginning on July 12, 2007. The latest to hit parts of Nairobi city was recorded on July 18, 2007 at 20h30 (East African Time). The strongest tremor measured 6.0 on the Richter scale. Geologists suspected that the sudden increase of tremors was indicative of the movement of magma through the Oldonyo L’engai. The volcano finally erupted on September 4, 2007, sending a plume of ash and steam at least 18 km downwind and covering the North and West flanks in fresh lava flows. The eruption has continued intermittently into 2008, as of the end of February it was reported that the eruption appeared to be gathering strength, with a major outburst taking place on 5 March 2008. During April periods of inactivity have been followed by eruptions on 8 and 17 April 2008. Eruptive activity continued until late August 2008. A visit to the summit in September 2008 discovered that lava emission had resumed from two vents in the floor of the new crater.  If you wish to climb Oldonyo L’engai please read the itinerary below:

Day 01: ARUSHA – LAKE NATRON: After breakfast pick up from the recommended hotel / lodge in Arusha where you will be spending a night, drive Lake Natron for hot lunch and afternoon at leisure at the camp. Dinner and overnight at Natron Tented Camp (Moivaro) / Lake Natron Camp (Ngaresero)

Day 02: LAKE NATRON: Early morning short drive and walk to the shores of Lake Natron. Here you will see many flamingoes, and may be a jackal on the prowl for its breakfast. After lunch there will be another short hike to Engaresero Waterfalls with a naturally formed, incredibly convenient Jacuzzi! Dinner will be early as it is important to get a few hours sleep, before being roused at 23h30 to make the final preparations for the hike.

Day 03: OLDONYO L’ENGAI: At 24h00 leave the camp and make the short drive to the base of Oldonyo L'engai - and begin to climb the Mountain of the Gods. The path itself is quite difficult underfoot and steep the whole way. Towards the rim it turns into powdery ash - like trudging through deep soft snow! Arriving at the summit in time for sunrise, the perfect reward! This volcano is active and glowing rock can often be seen bubbling out of the numerous ash cones on the top. Descend late morning in time for a good lunch, dip in the stream and a celebrate! Dinner and overnight at Natron Tented Camp (Moivaro) / Lake Natron Camp (Ngaresero)

Day 04: LAKE NATRON – ARUSHA: After depart from the camp with your picnic lunch with the optional to continue with the safari to Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Serengeti National Park or drive to Arusha for dinner and overnight at the recommended hotel / lodge depend on your budget.
